3x6 Approach of UNDP Provides Sustainable Income to Vulnerable Youth in Taiz
A high-level delegation from UNDP and the Yemeni government officials have conducted a two-day field visit to Taiz to review the progress of the youth beneficiaries’ business projects generated as a result of the Youth Economic Empowerment Project’s support that apply 3x6 Approach of UNDP.
The delegates have paid the visit to Saradif area in Maqbanah which painfully suffered from lack of basic services such as paved roads, transportation, water and electricity. Maqbanah area is considered by national official reports as one of the poorest rural areas in Taiz.
The beneficiary youth identified business opportunities like raising livestock, beekeeping or selling vegetables and some others have introduced modern methods to some of the existing traditional businesses to create profitable projects. As a result, these youth’s lives have been improved financially and socially.
“This project has provided me with hope,” one of the youth told the high-level delegation from UNDP and the Government of Yemen which included Mikiko Tanaka, Country Director of UNDP and Rashad Hilal, Studies Management Director at the Ministry of Planning and Cooperation (Office of Taiz), and Hasssan Saleh Ali Alsobhi, Senior Advisor from the Prime Ministry Office who are involved in the National Youth Employment Action Plan adopted by the council of ministers in September 2013.
“Building resilience of vulnerable groups is one of the goals of UNDP and one of the main mitigation tools to address drivers of instability. Therefore, UNDP with the Government of Yemen introduced the 3x6 approach to provide young people with job opportunities,” Ms. Tanaka said.
The delegation has also met with the Governor of Taiz and visited the national implementing partners — Social Fund for Development, Youth Leadership Development Foundation, SPARK YEMEN, and Millennium Foundation for Development.
The governmental officials said that the 3x6 approach has provided a genuine support to the most vulnerable groups to be empowered.
“Light should be shed on youth’s successes to set an example for other youth,” said Mr. Hassan Alsobhi.
The Governor of Taiz Shawqi Ahmed Hayel Saeed has expressed his appreciation of the efficient inclusion of youth through provision of job opportunities. “3x6 Approach has achieved quite a success in rural or urban areas in Taiz,” he added, “The future of Taiz relies on the small-scale projects”.
