New United Nations Resident Coordinator (UN RC)/ United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative (UNDP RR) Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed arrives in Yemen

Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed has been newly appointed, by the United Nations Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, as UN Yemen Resident Coordinator and UNDP Yemen Resident Representative, and he arrived in Sana’a. He presented his credentials today to H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abu Bakr Al Qirbi, and he assumed his duties immediately. In addition to the above mentioned position, Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed is also the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator.

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed served as the UN Resident Coordinator & UNDP Resident Representative in Syria for almost four years.

Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed is a national of Mauritania. He studied at Montpellier University in France, where he obtained a Licence in Economics. He also attended the University of Strasbourg in France to obtain a “Maitrise” in International Finance.

Furthermore, he has a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Development from the University of Manchester, in the United Kingdom. In addition, he has a Postgraduate Diploma of Economics and Social Policy Analysis from Maastricht Graduate School of Governance, in the Netherlands.

Before joining UNDP, he worked for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for twenty two years.  During that period, he served as UNICEF Representative to the Republic of Georgia and he also served as Deputy Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa based in Nairobi, Kenya. His last position in UNICEF was Director, Change Management, in UNICEF Headquarters in New York. He worked for UNICEF in many countries such as Kenya, Georgia, Togo, Congo, Rwanda, Jordan, Mauritania and HQ.

After he graduated from college, he worked as Specialist in Food Aid and Community Development for the Mauritanian Government in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

As UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed will coordinate all UN agencies works and activities in support of the UN reform and delivering as "One UN", for a greater harmonization to support the Gulf Countries Council (GCC) Plan commitments, humanitarian emergencies, reduce poverty and hunger, and improve gender equality.

As UNDP Resident Representative, he will lead the Country Office in the design and implementation of the new Country Programme Action Plan, in addition to his role to translate UNDP’s vision during the Transitional Period which focuses on national dialogue and stakeholders’ empowerment, democratic governance, early recovery, and rule of law, transitional justice and security sector reform.
