UN Secretary General declares Yemen eligible to Peacebuilding support
Yemen has been declared “eligible” to the United Nations Peace-building Fund. The news has been confirmed by the UNDP’s Senior Country Director, Gustavo Gonzalez, who added that this decision “opens a promising venue for a strategic partnership amongst Yemen, a wide large of donors supporting the Peacebuilding Fund and the United Nations”.
The decision of including Yemen into the group of 22 countries receiving support from Peace Building Fund was taken by the United Nations’ Secretary General following a request made by the Government of Yemen. With this decision, Yemen will shortly benefit from financial support channeled through the Peacebuilding and Recovery Facility.
This mechanism is designed to support a more structured peacebuilding process, driven by national actors based on a joint analysis of needs with the international community. Gustavo Gonzalez stated that “when a country is declared eligible to receive funding from the PBF, the Peace Building Support Office establishes a country allocation based on a Priority Plan and delegates project approval authority to a Joint Steering Committee that is co-chaired by the national Government and the United Nations”.
“This support is not just bringing financial resources –added Mr. Gonzalez- , but collective worldwide partnerships of more than 50 donors, decided to make this Yemeni transition a great success”.
