The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV), and many youth groups, celebrated today the International Volunteer Day in Al Boustan hotel, in Sana’a.
Mr. Jens Toyberg-Frandzen, UN Resident Coordinator, expressed his happiness to see this crowd of youth serving as volunteers. In an interview with Yemen SC TV, he said: “I can’t hide my smile when I see these youth volunteers enthusiastically serving their country”.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Ms. Randa Aboul-Hosn, UNDP Country Director delivered the speech of the UN Resident Coordinator. She said “Today is the day that cherishes all your contributions, your dedication, your wonderful spirit of service, and your efforts to help your beloved country in this crisis”.
She added: “During this crisis, it was quite impressive to see these Yemeni volunteers sending the message of peace in Hasaba area in Sana’a, and in Aden, Kharaz, and Haradh with the Internal Displaced Peoples and refugees”.
A young volunteer, Mr. Mohammad Al Salahi, delivered the speech of the Youth groups. He said: “we, youth of Yemen, are here today with you, on the occasion of International Volunteer Day 2011. We are celebrating this day, for the tenth year, to search for new fields where volunteerism can make a difference. We are also here to cherish volunteerism as an expression of our common humanity and as a tool to encourage mutual respect, solidarity, and reciprocity”.
After that, Mr. Jens Toyberg-Frandzen, UN Resident Coordinator, and Ms. Randa Aboul-Hosn, UNDP Country Director, opened the Youths Groups Exhibition, where youth groups highlighted their voluntarily contributions in the fields of development, awareness, capacity building, humanitarian relief, and others.
The celebration was attended by dozens of Yemeni volunteers who performed artistic, musical, theatrical, and cultural performances to promote the noble values of volunteerism.
