Seoul, 30 January 2018
The United Nations offices in the Republic of Korea (UNDP, UNESCAP, UNHCR, UNICEF, OHCHR, WFP and UNGC) will launch a two-day campaign next week in PyeongChang and Seoul, aimed at raising public awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the PyeongChang 2018 sustainability efforts.
The “PyeongChang 2018 Olympics & SDGs Talk Concert” – the centerpiece of the campaign – will take place on 6 February 2018 at 3pm at the KT Olleh Square Dream Hall in Seoul. The Talk Concert is a joint effort of the UN offices in Korea, the PyeongChang Organising Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) and the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Korea.
The two-hour event will be choreographed as a succession of inspiring mini-presentations by international and Korean personalities under an overarching theme of sports, SDGs and Olympic sustainability.
The speaker lineup includes:
Mr. Yiech Pur Biel, UNHCR’s High-Profile Supporter and a track and field athlete who competed for the Refugee Olympic Team in the 2016 Summer Olympics
Mr. Edward Kwon, WFP’s Celebrity Partner and a chef who developed special Korean dishes for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games
Ms. Sun-yu Jin, triple Olympic short-track speed skating gold medallist and ice skating coach
Ms. Sun Joo Lee, chief of the sustainability management unit at KT, the number one PyeongChang 2018 sponsor, who heads the Olympic IT village project
Mr. Duck-hee Lee, a hearing-impaired world-ranked tennis player
Private sector partners, including KT, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, and Coca Cola are sponsoring the event.
In a related event, Mr. Yiech Pur Biel and Mr. Balazs Horvath, Director of the UNDP Seoul Policy Centre, will attend a Truce Wall signing event in Pyeongchang on 5 February, where they will contribute messages of peace in support of the Olympic Truce, alongside Mr. Thomas Bach, President of the IOC, and Mr. Hee-beom Lee, President of the POCOG.
On behalf of the participating UN agencies, Mr. Balazs Horvath noted: “It is my sincere hope that this campaign and the Talk Concert will help the Korean public – particularly the young Korean generation – better understand the challenges ahead in achieving sustainable human development, take ownership of the SDGs, and take direct action for change.”
“It is my hope that this campaign will help secure international recognition for the PyeongChang 2018 sustainability efforts and outcomes. I also hope the UN and POCOG’s joint efforts will contribute to achieving the SDGs,” remarked Mr. Hee-beom Lee, President of POCOG.
