NOV 2017 | Six Latin American Countries Swap Ideas on Mobilizing Domestic Resources for Climate Action

Mobilizing finance for the implementation of national climate plans (NDCs) remains one of the most challenging issues as countries grabble with turning their intentions into actions. Getting a grasp on the domestic financial landscape and expenditures related to climate action is thereby a critical step in order to clarify the national base scenario and engage critical players (like finance or planning ministries). Thanks to some existing climate finance assessment tools, however, some countries already have a leg up in this area.

SEPT 2017 | Ghana Pilots Corporate Carbon Footprint for the Electricity Sector

Ghana recently introduced a corporate emissions reporting programme to better capture emissions from the electricity sector. The programme, which was led by Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Energy Commission (EC) and developed with UNDP LECB’s support, trained mining and electricity production companies on carbon accounting techniques.

SEP 2017 | Africa NDC Dialogue in Morocco

The Regional NDC Dialogue for Africa is next, convening a 3-day event hosted by the Government of Morocco in Rabat from September 26-28. The dialogue will help countries exchange experiences about approaches for NDC implementation planning in countries across Africa.

The Regional Dialogue on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for Latin America is a 3-day event hosted by the Ecuadorian government in Quito, Ecuador. After submitting their NDCs, countries face the challenge of implementing them successfully, coordinating efforts in the public and private sectors. Meeting the NDC targets will require translating them into concrete policies, programmes and projects.

Chile committed not only to a reduction in the intensity of its CO2 emissions by at least 30% by 2030, the promotion of non-conventional renewable energies by promoting an energy efficiency law and reforesting 100,000 hectares of mainly native forest, but also defined 4 other pillars of climate actionin addition to mitigation. These pillars are: Adaptation, Capacity Building, Development and Transfer of Technologies, and Financing.

JULY 2017 | NDC Partnership Commences Engagement in Number of Countries

As part of its NDC, Tunisia undertook to reduce its carbon intensity by 41% in 2030 compared to 2010, although significant financial resources are needed to reach this target ($US 18 billion for mitigation and $US 2 billion for adaptation).

JULY 2017 | Bhutan Undertakes Final Review of Climate Strategies

The National Environment Commission (NEC) and UNDP hosted a series of one-day “write shops” in May. Key stakeholders were invited to provide final technical comments on a suite of climate strategies that will now be signed off by senior Ministry officials. Stakeholders included government officials from planning, transport, industry and environment, as well as private sector representatives.

The Global NDC Conference in Berlin (May 2-5), which was hosted by Germany’s Environment Ministry (BMUB), set another milestone in terms of collective action, partnerships and identification of key support areas for NDC implementation. Mexico's chemical industry is projecting a yearly growth of 3.9% over the long-term, implying that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will grow from 20.82 MtCO2e in 2014 to 81.82 MtCO2e in 2050 if mitigation actions are not undertaken. Through the national LECB project, the National Association for the Chemical Industry (Asociación Nacional de la Industria Química (ANIQ) has developed a long-term low-emission development strategy (LEDS) to address this issue.

Following successful regional dialogues for Latin America and the Caribbean (in Costa Rica), Africa (in Tunisia), and the Pacific Islands (in Fiji) since the Paris Agreement, UNDP and partners held a Regional Dialogue on (Intended) Nationally Determined Contributions for Eurasia in Istanbul, Turkey. El Salvador – November 28 2016. An inter-ministerial Dialogue launched discussions on domestic climate finance needs for El Salvador’s NDC, and its closely linked National Climate Change Plan. Both Plans aim at decarbonizing El Salvador’s energy supply by increasing the use of renewable energy, while improving energy efficiency, land management, urban planning and transportation.
